Plan features, tasks, and milestones

A feature describes a capability you want to build. A task is a smaller piece of work. A milestone groups work around a target, such as a release.

Each belongs to a project. You need access to that project and permission to manage the type of work you are creating. The steps below use the standard forms; your organization may configure different fields or form names.

Create a feature

  1. Select Create, then choose Feature in Type.
  2. Open Project details, choose the Project, and enter Title.
  3. Add a Description of what the feature should do.
  4. Use Acceptance Criteria to explain how someone can tell it is finished.
  5. Choose a Milestone if it belongs to one, then review status, priority, dates, and assignees.
  6. Select Create Feature.

Acceptance criteria can be plain sentences or a short checklist. For example, explain what should happen when a person submits the form, including what happens when required information is missing.

Create a task

Select Create, choose Task, then pick its Project in Project details. Enter Title, add useful details, review priority, due date and assignees, then select Create Task.

Name the task after an outcome someone can check. A title such as "Add a clear error for an empty email field" gives the assignee more to work with than "Fix form."

Create a milestone

Select Create, choose Milestone, then choose the Project and enter Title. Add the version, description, dates, and assignees that apply. Select Create Milestone.

After saving, check the project to make sure the work is connected as intended. Creating a milestone does not by itself assign every related task or finish a release.
